My favourite part of working for myself is reclaiming my calendar. Derek from Finance can no longer decide he wants a 90-minute emergency meeting this afternoon.
That allows me to build my schedule around the things I love. Like training.
This week I worked out 7 days in a row. I used to regularly train 6 or 7 days a week when I was ultra-running. But after burnout, it’s been a real struggle to ramp back up. I’d feel exhausted after a couple of short runs and then need to recover for a few days.
I’ve been increasing slowly. Rucking has been something new for me over the last year. I ruck with ~20kg once or twice a week. I also throw some kettlebells around weekly.
So stringing together 7 days feels like a milestone. I ran 16km last week and I don’t think I’ve done that in 3 or 4 years. I even have an event on the horizon: the Fan Dance (tl;dr: walking up mountains with lots of weight on your back)
Physical training is very conducive to the other work I do: a run is the quickest way I know of turning a day around. My mind and body are invariably changed on the other side of it. So many new ideas also come to me whilst walking and hiking, a kind of thinking in motion.
7 days of training is a lot. Today is a rest day.
